Fuck Amanda Fucking Palmer.

I have a huge beef with Amanda Fucking Palmer right now. The other day, she posted this little pearl of wisdom on Tumblr. Go read it, I’ll wait right here. No seriously, read that. I know she’s just sharing something that someone else wrote, but she’s presenting it as a beautiful piece full of truth and wisdom and flowers and happy things.

What it comes down to is overprivileged fuckwaffling.

Let’s get a few things out of the way first, I’m not angry because I’m some conservative elitist who’s glorious achievements are trivialized under all the pieces that would make me a follower according to the piece she posted. I’ve taken risks in life. I’ve also gotten to see the safety net that is really there up close when I became homeless. A lot of my friends are artists, and trust me, they’re not relying on others, they learn what they need to know rather than hiring professionals to do their bidding because being an artist does not get you rich any time soon, even if you’re succesful. They also have to pay for hotel rooms when they’re touring because regular artists don’t get to randomly crash with fans worldwide when they travel. Only incredibly lucky internet superstars do.

It’s really worrying to see someone like Amanda Palmer put ideas in the heads of her fans about what the world is like when she doesn’t seem to really understand how privileged she is. The opportunities and normalities for her aren’t going to work on anyone but her.

Telling people to quit their education, their job, to take absurd risks, to not learn what you can hire others to do for you… That following these black and white ideals will make you either a follower or a leader… These are incredible naive things to say when you’re already living on the sacrifices of others.

I like Amanda Palmer’s music, but let’s face it, she gets everything handed to her. She doesn’t pay for hotels while touring but instead stays at the houses of random fans in the area to get free bed and board, only compensating through performances no matter how poor and underprivileged the fan happens to be. She got her music funded through crowdsourcing. A lot of her musical acts still rely on guest musicians playing for exposure and the privilege of playing with her. Oh, and she’s married to one of the best-selling writers of this generation.

Someone like this can very easily talk about their experiences as if they’re normal day-to-day things, and to them they are, but for a normal person none of this would work. Not everyone is as privileged as Amanda Fucking Palmer. Heck, most people aren’t even a quarter as privileged as her. So for her to then equate her success as a matter-of-fact thing that anyone could pull off easily if they’d just throw down the shackles of the oppressive society we live in is absolutely ridiculous.

The fans that give her a place to stay, the people who backed her Kickstarter, large portions of her entire act, all those things are happening through the sacrifices that fans are making for her cause. They are her safety net. Amanda Palmer has not sacrificed nearly as much as her fans have for her, but it’s certainly great to be the one in the spotlight and brag about the sacrifices others have made for you and trivialize them as one of the many great things you have done, simply because they’re done for you.

I don’t have a problem with the lack of conventionalism in her approach. I don’t have a problem with her success. I have a problem with her arrogance when talking about the two. She makes it clear she feels as if everyone else’s way of life is wrong and her path is the right one. She should change her gimmick from “Amanda Fucking Palmer” to that of “Amanda Elitist Palmer”, because, fuck, does she have some prejudices towards how followers live their life.

Not everyone is born in the magical fairy tale bubble that Amanda Fucking Palmer lives in. At this point, even Zooey Motherfucking Deschanel is more down to earth than everyone’s favorite condescending rebel artist.

That’s right, Zooey Motherfucking Deschanel is more hardcore than Amanda Elitism Palmer. She’s got more bang for your buck, and even though she most likely does secretly look down on you, she at least does it from a distance and keeps quiet about it. And you’ll never see her do her best to try to justify her tendency to overly rely on others in any viral TED videos any time soon.
